Personality:
  • Elena Fisher and Nathan Drake come from two opposite ends of the treasure hunting game. While her status as a journalist may lend her a big more prestige than a thief and treasure hunter, they apply a lot of the same skills. Methodical research, people skills for getting in touch with the locals, and a cleverness for solving puzzles and codes are all part of her toolbox that she uses in her day-to-day work, whether it’s trying to uncover sites previously thought lost to the world, or investigating the latest weapons dealer or criminal that’s come into her crosshairs. The major difference being that while Nate’s pirates and explorers are long dead and those harmed by their misdeeds long dead with them, Elena is dealing with contemporaries, who are affecting people in the real world. This can give a sense of justice to her work that sometimes gives it an edge over Nate’s in terms of respectability, but it can still be equally dangerous.

  • The thing is, Elena enjoys that thrill. In the first game, when we first meet her, she’s a journalist who turned fifteen minutes of fame on a Survivor-esque show into a Discovery Channel documentary show about lost wrecks, which is what puts her in the path of Nate. Throughout the first game, we can not only see how much her work means to her but also the lengths she will go to for a story. Not enough to sacrifice her life over it, though there is a moment where she comes close. When it’s a question between dropping her camera with all her footage to take Nate’s hand when dangling off a cliff, she definitely considered not letting go of the camera, even if she ultimately did.

  • Elena has a dry, sarcastic sense of humor that works well with Nate’s tendencies towards self-deprecation. They complement each other both in terms of the adventures they seek and the way they like to learn about the world.

  • Elena can be a tactician, and is good at assessing the world around her to find the missing pieces. She’s particularly good with reading people, assessing their wants and needs, as well as determining a good egg from a bad one. She’s intuitive, but is also willing to extend the benefit of the doubt, after expressing her reservations.

  • That being said, as much as she loves her husband, it doesn’t mean they don’t disagree. At the point at which she’s coming into the game, she and Nate are in the middle of one of those fights and at a point where they’re trying to determine how normal their normal life needs to be. Elena only wants to keep Nate safe, but she’s already caught Nate lying to her about where he’s been, and about the fact that he has a brother. While she will eventually come to forgive them, their relationship is caught in a tenuous place, and Elena is considering her own role into the situation they’ve landed themselves in, while still being pretty mad at Nate. So they will have that to work through, as well as being in Hell and all the questions it presents sparking her tendency to go digging into trouble. Either way, should be fun for everyone not Nate.

  • Weaknesses/Temptations:
  • Elena is curious to a fault and has a nose for injustice, so if she thinks there is a story to be found/told, she will go to great lengths to pursue it. And people with her have gotten killed in the pursuit of that story. They likely knew what they were getting into, but it still happened.

  • She loves her husband, sometimes to the detriment of herself. Nate is a good man at his core, but he still makes poor decisions or will lie to her about those decisions. She will place faith in him, even if it’s against her better judgement, and will try to protect him however she can—which sometimes involves putting her in positions where she will have to hurt people in self-defense.

  • She’s competitive and she loves the adventure just as much as Nate does—she just doesn’t always let herself admit it. As much as their life is dangerous, she can’t resist the puzzle and she will attempt to dig into Hell and learn it’s secrets, even if it comes to the detriment of herself.
